BACKGROUND: Atrial septal defect (ASD) is a common form of congenital heart disease. Although several genes related to ASD have been found, the genetic factors of ASD remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between 10 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and sporadic atrial septal defects. METHODS: Based on the results of 34 individual whole exome sequences, 10 candidate SNPs were selected. In total, 489 ASD samples and 420 normal samples were collected. The 10 SNPs in the case group and the control group were identified through Snapshot genotyping technology. The χ2-test and unconditional regression model were used to evaluate the relationship between ASD and each candidate SNP. Haploview software was used to perform linkage disequilibrium and haplotype analysis. RESULTS: The χ2 results showed that the FLT4 rs383985 (P = 0.003, OR = 1.115-1.773), HYDIN rs7198975 (P = 0.04621, OR = 1.003-1.461), and HYDIN rs1774266 (P = 0.04621, OR = 1.003-1.461) alleles were significantly different between the control group and the case group (P < 0.05). Only the association with the FLT4 polymorphism was statistically significant after adjustment for multiple comparisons. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that a possible molecular pathogenesis associated with sporadic ASD is worth exploring in future studies.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the relationship between glycated serum protein (GSP) and progressive infarction (PI). METHODS: From April 2017 to December 2020, we recruited 477 patients within 48 hours after the onset of acute ischemic stroke into this case-control study. Demographic characteristics, clinical information, and laboratory and neuroimaging data were recorded after admission. RESULTS: PI occurred in 144 (30.8%) patients. Patients with PI had higher initial National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores, higher discharge NIHSS scores, higher modified Rankin scale scores at 3 months after onset, higher GSP levels, lower prothrombin times, and lower creatinine levels than patients without PI. The likelihood of PI increased with increases in the GSP quartile. Multiple regression analysis revealed that high GSP levels (>2.14 mmol/L) were independently associated with PI. Subgroup analyses identified high GSP levels as an independent predictor of PI in patients with large artery atherosclerosis (third quartile: odds ratio [OR] = 3.793; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.555-9.250; fourth quartile: OR = 2.675; 95% CI = 1.056-6.776) and anterior circulation small vessel occlusion (fourth quartile: OR = 13.859; 95% CI = 2.024-94.885). CONCLUSIONS: GSP might be an independent predictor for PI in certain patients with acute ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and hypertension are major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases that affect millions of people worldwide. Both conditions are associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, which is mediated by adipokines such as adiponectin. Adiponectin is the most abundant adipokine that has a beneficial impact on metabolic and vascular biology, while high serum concentrations are associated with some syndromes. This "adiponectin paradox" still needs to be clarified in obesity-associated hypertension. The aim of this study was to investigate how adiponectin affects blood pressure, inflammation, and metabolic function in obesity hypertension using a Chinese adult case-control study. METHODS: A case-control study that had finished recruiting 153 subjects divided as four characteristic groups. Adiponectin serum levels were tested by ELISA in these subjects among these four characteristic Chinese adult physical examination groups. Waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SB), diastolic blood pressure (DB), and other clinical laboratory data were collected. Analyzation of correlations between the research index and differences between groups was done by SPSS. RESULTS: Serum adiponectin levels in the| normal healthy group (NH group) were significantly higher than those in the newly diagnosed untreated just-obesity group (JO group), and negatively correlated with the visceral adiposity index. With multiple linear egression analysis, it was found that, for serum adiponectin, gender, serum albumin (ALB), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) were the significant independent correlates, and for SB, age and HDLC were the significant independent correlates, and for DB, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was the significant independent correlate. The other variables did not reach significance in the model. CONCLUSIONS: Our study reveals that adiponectin's role in obesity-hypertension is multifaceted and is influenced by the systemic metabolic homeostasis signaling axis. In obesity-related hypertension, compensatory effects, adiponectin resistance, and reduced adiponectin clearance from impaired kidneys and liver all contribute to the "adiponectin paradox".

BACKGROUND: Nutritive sucking and nonnutritive sucking (NNS) may affect the craniofacial development, differently. AIM AND OBJECTIVES: We investigated associations between NNS habits (NNSHs), developing malocclusion, and various feeding practices in 3-6-year-old children. METHODOLOGY: A sample of 350 children 3-6-year-old from various preschools were selected for this case-control study (94 with NNSH and 256 without NNSH). NNSH (outcome) and feeding practices and developing malocclusions (exposures) were assessed using a structured study tool. RESULTS: The prevalence of NNSH in 3-6-year-old children was 26.8%. The odds (95% [confidence interval (CI)]) of boys compared to girls having NNSH were 0.66 (0.4121-1.706) (P = 0.0290). The overall prevalence of developing malocclusion in 3-6-year-old children was 34.01% out of which open bite was most commonly reported with 12.57% followed by spacing 8.5%, increased overjet 6.8%, crowding 2.2%, posterior crossbite and rotation 1.4%, and overbite 1.14%. Breastfeeding was found to be the most commonly used mode of feeding reported by 53.42% of mothers. It was found that the odds (95% [CI]) of subjects having NNSH were 0.66 (0.4694-0.9460) (P < 0.0001) who were not breastfed as compared to those who were breastfed. Among developing malocclusions, increased overjet with P = 0.0019, open bite with P = 0.0416, and spacing with P = 0.0243 were found to be associated with feeding practices. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of NNSH and developing malocclusions (increased overjet, open bite, and spacing) was 26.8% and 34.01%, respectively. Breastfeeding played a protective role against developing NNSH.

Aim: To investigate whether it is safe for patients with Omicron variant infection to undergo surgery during perioperative period. Methods: A total of 3,661 surgical patients were enrolled: 3,081 who were not infected with the Omicron variant and 580 who were infected with the Omicron variant. We conducted propensity score matching (PSM) with a ratio of 1:4 and a caliper value of 0.1 to match the infected and uninfected groups based on 13 variables. After PSM, we further divided the Infected group (560 cases) by the number of days between the preoperative Omicron variant infection and surgery: 0-7, 8-14, 15-30, and >30 days. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was subsequently conducted on the categorical variables and continuous variables with a P value below 0.05, thereby comparing the infected group (0-7, 8-14, 15-30, >30 days) and the uninfected group for perioperative complications. Results: Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that, compared to the uninfected group, among the four subgroups of the infected patients (0-7, 8-14, 15-30, >30 days), only renal insufficiency in the 8-14 days subgroup (OR: 0.09, 95%CI 0.01-0.74, P = 0.025) and anemia in the > 30 days subgroup (OR 0.6, 95%CI 0.4-0.9, P < 0.017) showed significant difference. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the incidence rate of blood transfusion, postoperative intensive care unit transfer, lung infection/pneumonia, pleural effusion, atelectasis, respiratory failure, sepsis, postoperative deep vein thrombosis, hypoalbuminemia, urinary tract infections, and medical expenses. Conclusion: Omicron infection does not significantly increase the risk of perioperative major complications. The Omicron infection may not be a sufficient risk factor to postpone elective surgery.

Background: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), as the most abundant form of DNA variation in the human genome, contribute to age-related cataracts (ARC) development. Apoptosis of lens epithelial cells (LECs) is closely related to ARC formation. Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) contributes to cell apoptosis regulation. Moreover, IGF1 was indicated to exhibit a close association with cataract formation. Afterward, an investigation was conducted to examine the correlation between polymorphisms in IGF1 and the susceptibility to ARC. Methods: The present investigation was a case-control study. Venous blood draws were collected from the participants for DNA genotyping. Lens capsule samples were collected to detect mRNA and apoptosis. TaqMan RT-PCR was used to detect IGF1 polymorphism genotypes and qRT PCR was used to detect IGF1 mRNA levels in LECs. LEC apoptosis was evaluated through flow cytometry. The chi-square test was used to compare differences between ARCs and controls of each SNP. Results: We found that the G allele frequency in the IGF1-rs6218 was higher in the ARCs than in the controls. Furthermore, it was observed that the rs6218 GG genotype exhibited a positive correlation to elevated levels of IGF1 mRNA in LECs. The IGF1 mRNA in the LECs and the apoptosis of LECs in nuclear type of ARCs (ARNC) was higher than the controls. Conclusion: The susceptibility to ARC was related to IGF1-rs6218 polymorphism, and this polymorphism is associated with IGF1 expression at the mRNA level. Moreover, apoptosis in LECs of ARNCs was found to be increased.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT).It results in progressive intestinal epithelium structural and functional damage that necessitates lifetime medication.Thereis imbalance in the production of T helper 1 (Th1), Th2 and Th17 cytokines. This plays a crucial role in the chronic inflammatory process and the defective immune response to pathogenic agents; thus promoting the recurrence of the disease.Our aim of this study was to detect serum IL-17 levels in IBD patients and its relation with disease activity. METHODS: This was a single center case control study, conducted at hepatology and gastroenterology unit, Mansoura specialized Medical Hospital, Egypt.Patients who were included were aged 18-65 years, diagnosed either Ulcerative Colitis (UC)or Crohn's Disease (CD) based on previous colonoscopy.IBD activity was measured for UC using the MAYO score and CD using the CD activity index (CDAI). Fifty five patients were UC, 24 patients were CD, 21 patients were control.Patients who were excluded were under 15 years old, with history of GIT malignancy, or any serious comorbidities. Study protocol was approved by Institution Research Board (IRB) of Mansoura Medical College.All patients were subjected to full history taking, routine physical examination, colonoscopy and laboratory investigations including serum IL-17 levels by ELISA besides CBC, CRP, ESR and fecal calprotectin. RESULTS: Serum IL-17 level was increased significantly among UC; median (min-max) = 72(21-502)pg/ml, in CD 54.5(25-260) versus control 19 (14-35), P < 0.001.However, it was not correlated to the disease activity either Mayo score of UC or CDAI of CD.There was significant correlation to the extent of inflammation in UC affecting the colon (either proctosigmoiditis, left sided colitis or pan colitis), also to the type of CD (either inflammatory, stricturing or fistulizing) by P < 0.05.It was not correlated significantly with any of the IBD activity markers (CRP, ESR, or fecal calprotectin).Yet there was negative significant correlation with Hb level (r =-0.28, p = 0.005).There was not significant association between median serum level of IL-17 & duration of disease (P = 0.6).However, median IL-17 was higher among hospitalized cases than non-hospitalized (73 & 55, pg/ml respectively; p < 0.002). AUC was significantly differentiating between IBD and control group = 0.993 with the best-detected cut off point from curve 32 pg/ml yielding sensitivity of 97.5% and specificity of 95.2%. CONCLUSION: Serum IL-17 increases in colonic inflammation significantly more than in control group, however its increase is not correlated to IBD activity.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the relationship between preeclampsia and maternal serum apelin-13 and apelin-36 concentrations. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out in the Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic of Umraniye Training and Research Hospital. The preeclampsia group consisted of 40 pregnant women diagnosed with preeclampsia, and the control group consisted of 40 healthy pregnant women matched with the preeclampsia group in terms of age and body mass index. The two groups were compared in terms of maternal serum apelin-13 and apelin-36 concentrations. RESULTS: Both groups were similar in terms of demographic characteristics and the gestational week at blood sampling. Maternal serum apelin-13 and apelin-36 concentrations were significantly lower in the preeclampsia group than in the control group (p = 0.005, p = 0.001, respectively). The optimal cutoff value for the prediction of preeclampsia in receiver operator curve analysis for apelin-13 was determined as 1781.67 pg/ml with 60% sensitivity and 60% specificity, and 885.5 pg/ml for apelin-36 with 67% sensitivity and 65% specificity. We divided the preeclampsia group into two groups mild and severe and compared the three groups in terms of maternal serum apelin-13 and apelin-36 concentrations. The lowest apelin-13 concentration was detected in the severe preeclampsia group, while the lowest apelin-36 concentration was detected in the mild preeclampsia group (p = 0.020, p = 0.003, respectively). Considering the onset of the disease, we divided the preeclampsia group into two groups early and late-onset, then compared the three groups in terms of maternal serum apelin-13 and apelin-36 concentrations. The lowest maternal serum apelin-13 and apelin-36 concentrations were detected in the early-onset preeclampsia group (p = 0.016, p = 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: It was determined that serum apelin-13 and apelin-36 concentrations were significantly lower in preeclamptic pregnant women, this decrease was more significant in early-onset preeclampsia, and low maternal serum apelin-13 concentration was more associated with the severity of preeclampsia.

Susceptibility to COVID-19, the most devastating global pandemic, appears to vary widely across different population groups. Exposure to toxoplasmosis has been proposed as a theory to explain the diversity of these populations. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible association between latent toxoplasmosis and COVID-19 and its probable correlation with markers of oxidative stress, C-reactive protein (CRP) and ferritin. In a case-control study, blood samples were collected from 91 confirmed (48 non-pneumonic; NP, and 43 pneumonic; P) COVID-19 patients and 45 healthy controls. All participants were tested for IgG anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies and oxidative stress markers (nitric oxide [NO], superoxide dismutase [SOD] and reduced glutathione [GSH]), and CRP and serum ferritin levels were determined. In COVID-19 patients, IgG anti-T. gondii antibodies were found in 54% compared to 7% in the control group, with the difference being statistically significant (P ˂ 0.001). However, no significant correlation was found between the severity of COVID-19 and latent T. gondii infection. Latent toxoplasmosis had a strong influence on the risk of COVID-19. NO and SOD levels were significantly increased in COVID-19 patients, while GSH levels decreased significantly in them compared to control subjects (P ˂ 0.001 for both values). CRP and ferritin levels were also significantly elevated in P COVID-19 patients infected with toxoplasmosis. This is the first study to look at the importance of oxidative stress indicators in co-infection between COVID-19 and T. gondii. The high prevalence of latent toxoplasmosis in COVID-19 suggests that T. gondii infection can be considered a strong indicator of the high risk of COVID-19.

The prevalence of posttraumatic olfactory dysfunction in children after mild traumatic brain injury ranges from 3 to 58%, with potential factors influencing this variation, including traumatic brain injury severity and assessment methods. This prospective longitudinal study examines the association between mild traumatic brain injury and olfactory dysfunction in children. Seventy-five pediatric patients with mild traumatic brain injury and an age-matched healthy control group were enrolled. Olfactory function was assessed using the Sniffin' Sticks battery, which focuses on olfactory threshold and odor identification. The study found that children with mild traumatic brain injury had impaired olfactory function compared with healthy controls, particularly in olfactory threshold scores. The prevalence of olfactory dysfunction in the patient group was 33% and persisted for 1 yr. No significant association was found between traumatic brain injury symptoms (e.g. amnesia, loss of consciousness) and olfactory dysfunction. The study highlights the importance of assessing olfactory function in children after mild traumatic brain injury, given its potential impact on daily life. Although most olfactory dysfunction appears transient, long-term follow-up is essential to fully understand the recovery process. The findings add valuable insights to the limited literature on this topic and urge the inclusion of olfactory assessments in the management of pediatric mild traumatic brain injury.

This study intended to explore the neuropsychological ramifications in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) survivors in Malaysia and to examine treatment-related sequelae. A case-control study was conducted over a 2-year period. Seventy-one survivors of childhood ALL who had completed treatment for a minimum of 1 year and were in remission, and 71 healthy volunteers were enlisted. To assess alertness (processing speed) and essential executive functioning skills such as working memory capacity, inhibition, cognitive flexibility, and sustained attention, seven measures from the Amsterdam Neuropsychological Tasks (ANT) program were chosen. Main outcome measures were speed, stability and accuracy of responses. Mean age at diagnosis was 4.50 years (SD ± 2.40) while mean age at study entry was 12.18 years (SD ± 3.14). Survivors of childhood ALL underperformed on 6 out of 7 ANT tasks, indicating poorer sustained attention, working memory capacity, executive visuomotor control, and cognitive flexibility. Duration of treatment, age at diagnosis, gender, and cumulative doses of chemotherapy were not found to correlate with any of the neuropsychological outcome measures. Childhood ALL survivors in our center demonstrated significantly poorer neuropsychological status compared to healthy controls.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most frequent predictors of obstetric outcome among Romanian pregnant women. Thus, we aimed to investigate the role of rs7903146 (C/T) TCF7L2 gene polymorphism in the presence of GDM and to evaluate the influence on maternal-fetal outcomes in a cohort of pregnant women from Northern Transylvania. Our prospective case-control study was performed in a tertiary maternity center on 61 patients diagnosed with GDM and 55 normal pregnant patients. The patients were genotyped for rs7903146 (C/T) polymorphism of the TCF7L2 gene using the PCR-RFLP method between 24 and 28 weeks of gestation. The minor T allele was associated with a high risk of developing GDM (OR 1.71 [95% CI 0.82-3.59]) if both heterozygote and homozygote types were considered. Also, a higher risk of developing GDM was observed in homozygous carriers (OR 3.26 [95% CI 1.10-9.68]). Women with the TT genotype were more likely to require insulin therapy during pregnancy than other genotypes with a 5.67-fold increased risk ([1.61-19.97], p = 0.015). TT homozygote type was significantly associated with fetal macrosomia for birth weights greater than the 95th percentile (p = 0.034). The homozygous TT genotype is associated with an increased risk of developing GDM. Also, rs7903146 (C/T) TCF7L2 variant is accompanied by a high probability of developing insulin-dependent gestational diabetes mellitus (ID-GDM). The presence of at least one minor T allele was associated with a higher risk of fetal macrosomia.

BACKGROUND: The association between soy product consumption and cancer risk varies among studies. Therefore, this comprehensive meta-analysis of observational studies examines the association between soy product consumption and total cancer risk. METHODS: This study was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. Up to October 2023, all eligible published studies were searched through PubMed and Web of Science databases. RESULTS: A total of 52 studies on soy product consumption were included in this meta-analysis (17 cohort studies and 35 case-control studies). High consumption of total soy products (RR: 0.69; 95% CI: 0.60, 0.80), tofu (RR: 0.78; 95% CI: 0.70, 0.86), and soymilk (RR: 0.75; 95% CI: 0.60, 0.93) were associated with reduced total cancer risk. No association was found between high consumption of fermented soy products (RR: 1.18; 95% CI: 0.95, 1.47), non-fermented soy products (RR: 0.95; 95% CI: 0.77, 1.18), soy paste (RR: 1.00; 95% CI: 0.88, 1.14), miso soup (RR: 0.99; 95% CI: 0.87, 1.12), or natto (RR: 0.96; 95% CI: 0.82, 1.11) and cancer risk. A 54 g per day increment of total soy products reduced cancer risk by 11%, a 61 g per day increment of tofu reduced cancer risk by 12%, and a 23 g per day increment of soymilk reduced cancer risk by 28%, while none of the other soy products were associated with cancer risk. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that high total soy product consumption, especially soymilk and tofu, is associated with lower cancer risk. More prospective cohort studies are still needed to confirm the causal relationship between soy product consumption and cancer risk.

Patients with high-grade gliomas are at high risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs with multiple roles in tumour biology, haemostasis and platelet function. Their association with VTE risk in high-grade glioma has not been comprehensively mapped so far. We thus conducted a nested case-control study within 152 patients with WHO grade IV glioma that had been part of a prospective cohort study on VTE risk factors. At inclusion a single blood draw was taken, and patients were thereafter followed for a maximum of 2 years. During that time, 24 patients (16%) developed VTE. Of the other 128 patients, we randomly selected 24 age- and sex-matched controls. After quality control, the final group size was 21 patients with VTE during follow-up and 23 without VTE. Small RNA next-generation sequencing of plasma was performed. We observed that hsa-miR-451a was globally the most abundant miRNA. Notably, 51% of all miRNAs showed a correlation with platelet count. The analysis of miRNAs differentially regulated in VTE patients-with and without platelet adjustment-identified potential VTE biomarker candidates such as has-miR-221-3p. Therewith, we here provide one of the largest and deepest peripheral blood miRNA datasets of high-grade glioma patients so far, in which we identified first VTE biomarker candidates that can serve as the starting point for future research.

OBJECTIVES: Occlusal sensitivity (OS)-the ability to detect fine objects between opposing teeth-mainly relies on the activity of mechanoreceptors located in the periodontal ligament. We tested whether somatosensory amplification (SSA)-the tendency to perceive normal somatic sensations as being intense, noxious, and disturbing, which plays a critical role in hypervigilance-affects OS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We measured OS in 66 adults divided into three groups based on their SSA scores (LowSSA, Intermediate - IntSSA, HighSSA) by asking them to bite on aluminum foils (8 to 72 µm thick) and a sham foil, and report whether they felt each foil. We performed 20 trials for each thickness and sham condition (each participant was tested 120 times), and compared the frequency of correct answers (%correct) among groups after adjusting for participants' trait anxiety, depression, self-reported oral behaviors, and masseter cross-sectional area. RESULTS: %correct was affected by the interaction Foil Thickness-by-SSA (p = 0.007). When tested with the 8 µm foil, the HighSSA group had a lower %correct than the IntSSA (contrast estimate [95% CI]: -14.2 [-25.8 - -2.6]; p = 0.012) and the LowSSA groups (-19.1 [-31.5 - -6.6]; p = 0.001). Similarly, with the 24 µm foil, the HighSSA group had a lower %correct compared to the IntSSA (-12.4 [-24.8-0.1]; p = 0.048) and the LowSSA groups (-10.8 [-22.5-0.8]; p = 0.073). CONCLUSION: Individuals with high SSA present with an aberrant occlusal sensitivity. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Our findings provide novel insights into the relationship between occlusal perception and psychological factors, which may influence an individual's ability to adapt to dental work.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is the child birth before 37 completed weeks .Prematurity is one of the leading causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality due to the complications associated with it. The objective of the study was to determine the maternal risk factors associated with all preterm birth in singleton pregnancy at National hospital. METHODS: Hospital based unmatched case control study was conducted between March 2021 to December 2021 at National hospital, Thimphu, Bhutan. Case to control ratio was 1:2.Data were collected using interviewer -administered structured questionnaires. The collected data were entered into Epi-data and exported into SPSS for analysis. Independent variables with p-valves<0.05 in the univariate analysis were entered to multi variable logistic model to estimate the strength of association .P-valve <0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Total of 107 cases and 201 controls participated with a response rate of 95.95%.Multiple logistic regression showed that mothers with ANC follow ≤ four[aOR 9.58(7.36-28.86) ], previous history of preterm delivery [aOR 2.99(1.5-15.77) ], previous caesarean section [aOR 5.72(2.19-14.92)], prelabour rupture of membrane [aOR 8.67(3.78-19.73)], fetal growth restriction [aOR 7.28(2.11-25.11)] , and pre-eclampsia [aOR 10.99(6.75-85.29) were the risk factors positively associated with preterm birth . CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights that preeclampsia, number of antenatal care visits ≤ four, prelabour rupture of membrane, fetal growth restriction, previous caesarean section and previous preterm delivery were the risk factors for preterm birth. This show the need of early screening and prevention of preeclampsia, strengthening of antenatal care follow-up, and treatment of infection to prevent prelabour rupture of membrane, reducing primary caesarean section and more attention and care with previous preterm birth .

BACKGROUND: Maternal diabetes adversely affects fetal cardiovascular system development. Previous studies have reported that the fetuses of mothers with diabetes exhibit both structural and functional changes; nevertheless, prior studies have not examined the association between glucose control and fetal cardiac morphology and performance. Thus, the objective was to determine the association between fetal cardiac morphology and function and maternal glucose control in type 1 diabetes and to compare the differences in measured cardiac parameters between the fetuses of mothers with diabetes and healthy controls. METHODS: In this prospective, longitudinal case-control study - including 62 pregnant women with type 1 diabetes mellitus and 30 healthy pregnant women - fetal cardiac assessment using B-mode, M-mode, and spectral pulsed-wave Doppler was performed in the second and third trimesters. In women with T1DM, glycated hemoglobin and data obtained from glucose sensors - including the percentage of time in, below, and above the range (TIR, TBR, and TAR, respectively), and coefficient of variation (CV) - were analyzed across three time periods: the last menstrual period to 13 (V1), 14-22 (V2), and 23-32 weeks (V3) of gestation. Fetal cardiac indices were compared between groups, and the correlation between glucose control and fetal cardiac indices was assessed. RESULTS: At 28-32 weeks, the fetuses of women with T1DM exhibited increased left ventricular end-diastolic length, relative interventricular septum thickness, right ventricular cardiac output, and pulmonary valve peak systolic velocity compared with healthy controls. At 18-22 weeks, pulmonary and aortic valve diameters, left and right ventricular stroke volumes, and left cardiac output inversely correlated with the CV and glycated hemoglobin levels at V1 and V2. Furthermore, at 28-32 weeks, pulmonary and aortic valve diameters, left ventricular stroke volume, cardiac output, and right/left atrioventricular valve ratio inversely correlated with the TBR at V1, V2, and V3. Moreover, diastolic functional parameters correlated with the TAR and glycated hemoglobin levels, particularly after the first trimester. CONCLUSION: In women with T1DM, maternal hyperglycemia during pregnancy correlates with fetal diastolic function, whereas glucose variability and hypoglycemia inversely correlate with fetal left ventricular systolic function in the second and third trimesters.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to explore the correlation between biomarkers of lipid metabolism and gastric cancer. METHODS: 1120 gastric cancer patients and 1134 health examiners enrolled in this study. The clinic data and serum lipid level, including Total cholesterol (TC), Triglyceride (TG), Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), were collected. RESULTS: Serum TG and LDL-C levels in patients with gastric cancer were higher than those in the control group. HDL-C levels were lower than the control group (P < 0.05). HDL-C and LDL-C were significantly correlated with the risk of gastric cancer. Concentrating on clinicopathological features, increased TG was more frequently in male patients with distal gastric cancer, N0 stage and early TNM stage. Increased TC was more frequently in early T, N and TNM stage. Decreased HDL-C was more common in distal location and low-undifferentiated gastric cancer. LDL-C elevation was more common in distal gastric cancer and early T stage. CONCLUSIONS: The serum lipid level of gastric cancer patients was higher than healthy controls. HDL-C and LDL-C abnormal correlated with gastric cancer risk. However, as the progresses of gastric cancer, poor patient intake, increased tumor consumption, and continuous declining in nutritional status, the levels of TC and TG gradually decreased in advanced gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCMP) is characterized by the enlargement and weakening of the heart and is a major cause of heart failure in children. Infection and nutritional deficiencies are culprits for DCMP. Zinc is an important nutrient for human health due to its anti-oxidant effect that protects cell against oxidative damage. This case-control study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary intake of zinc and selenium and the risk of DCMP in pediatric patients. METHODS: A total of 36 DCMP patients and 72 matched controls were recruited, and their dietary intakes were assessed via a validated food frequency questionnaire. We used chi-square and sample T-test for qualitative and quantitative variables, respectively. Logistic regression analysis was applied to assess the relationship between selenium and zinc intake with the risk of DCMP. RESULTS: After fully adjusting for confounding factors, analyses showed that selenium (OR = 0.19, CI = 0.057-0.069, P trend < 0.011) and zinc (OR = 0.12, CI = 0.035-0.046, P trend < 0.002) intake were strongly associated with 81% and 88% lower risk of pediatric DCMP, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the protective role of adequate dietary intake of selenium and zinc in decreasing the risk of DCMP in children. Malnutrition may exacerbate the condition and addressing these micronutrient deficiencies may improve the cardiac function. Further studies are recommended to detect the underlying mechanisms and dietary recommendations for DCMP prevention.
